Boneless Chicken Claypot Rice @ The Uncle Sam's Claypots, Clementi

Although the chicken was not cooked together with the rice, the rice still seemed tasty to me. The chicken was tender and was of generous portion. The amount of dark sauce added is just nice; not too much, not too little. I even found a piece of salted fish at the bottom! I also liked the vegetables that they added on top.

Overall, the taste just ranks slightly below other famous claypot rice that I have tried.

What's more a student set, including a boneless chicken claypot rice, a glass of fruit punch and a bowl of ice kacang, costs only $5.50 before gst and service tax which amounts to about $6+. This set would have costed $14+ if ordered seperately. Value is not a problem at all. Would surely go back again.

"Old Man..." or "Cool Man!"?

I'm not anywhere in this photo but my nickname, given by some of my friends, is somehow related to it.

That name is none other than "Uncle".

Why?

Frequently during the weekends, I would make my way down to the coffeeshop in the morning, order a cup of coffee and take out my newspaper to read.

If only I had internet connection from the coffee shop, I'd be the coolest "Uncle" who makes his way down to the coffee shop in the morning, order a cup of coffee and flips out his hand phone to read the news online.

NZ Ribeye Steak with Brown Sauce @ Jack's Place, Ang Moh Kio

This ribeye steak definitely tasted better then their T-Bone steak.

Did not have that huge bone to obstruct eating and the meat was of better quality.

The baked potato is great! (as described in the other post)

"Actually the "main dish" was the baked potato! The waitress came with a plate holding 3 lamp-looking cups. Each cup had different ingredients to go with the potato. There was one with chicken bacon bits, another with a sort of sweet white cream sauce and the last one with spring onions. I requested to have everything other than the spring onion. Never had such an unique experience. The potato was very tasty together with the toppings and also very filling."

This set lunch which comes with a dessert of the day, soup and a cup of coffee/tea is really worthed the $13.50.

The beef tasted really ordinary. The spaghetti was dry without any sauce but had a strong taste of bell peppers. We had to end up mixing the beef together with the spaghetti.

This is a student's meal and comes with 2 scoops of ice-cream and a cup of soft drinks at only $6.50 which would make a quick and affordable lunch.

Chicken Cutlet with Fries @ Jack's Place, Ang Moh Kio

This is a student meal at $6.50 which comes with 2 scoops of ice-cream and a cup of soft drink.

The fries were fine but I would prefer having some spices, like black pepper, with it.

The chicken was too oily but the skin was very crispy.

It was probably not well prepared because it is during the busy lunch period otherwise, with the ice cream and drinks that it comes along, it would have been one of the best valued chicken cutlet set I have came across.

Snails!

This is a delicacy that I believe many people in Singapore do not dare to think of eating.

This is the first time I have tasted this dish. Forced myself to throw away the image of snails in my mind and just treat it as a shellfish.

Yummy! Wasn't as bad as anyone would think. In fact, I kind of got hooked to it.

The escargots felt a little chewy and thats the only word I can think to describe it now.

The combination with the garlic and butter sauce was perfect! I just could not get enough of the sauce.

Amazing first taste experience! Can't wait to eat it again!

Priced at $9.50 per half dozen (w/o including 7% GST & 10% Service charge), it's surely good value!

NZ T-Bone Steak with Brown Sauce @ Jack's Place, Ang Moh Kio

So huge it could neither fit the hotplate nor my camera.

Ordered the steak to be well-done but to my disappointment, it had most of its inner part pinkish in colour and even abit of red.

The quality of the meat isn't really fantastic but still acceptable. What I think it lacked was abit more of the tasty brown sauce.

Actually the "main dish" was the baked potato! The potato was very tasty together with the toppings and also very filling.

The vegetables, espcially the brocolli" were very sweet and delicious too. I even finished all the carrots by myself!

At only $17.30 for the set lunch which comes with a cup of coffee/tea, dessert of the day and soup, what more could I have asked for?

Burger or Rice?

Thinking back to the time when I was in primary school simply makes me giggle.

There was a day when my science teacher presented me with an extremely easy question and an unusually tough choice.

I had to stand in front of a table.

On the left side, there lies a plate of burger and onion rings.

Placed on the other side was
a bowl of fish soup and rice.

Burger or Rice?

Which choice did I make?

Black Forest and Pear Sake Ice-Cream @ Island Creamery

There were quite a few unique flavours like teh-tarik and beer sorbet, but we decided to have 1 scoop each of black forest and pear sake.

The pear sake is so pale in colour that it camouflages with the white bowl. Like its colour, it is pretty lightly flavoured and seemed too bland for me. I would rather have ate a chilled pear instead.

The black forest has a special touch to it. I tasted it and it seemed to have 2 flavours to me. When I put it in my mouth, it seemed to my senses that it was like chocolate but then there was the berry flavour after a split second.

Did not manage to finish everything especially the pear sake.

At only $2.80 for 1 scoop and $4.50 for 2 scoops, I feel that the value at Island Creamery is present but make sure you try which flavour you like first before ordering. Choose the right flavours and melt the ice cream in your mouth or it will just melt in the bowl like ours.

Grilled Lamb Chops in Black Pepper Sauce @ Mad Jack Cafe, Bukit Timah

Had it well-done. For a lamb-lover like me, the unique lamb taste is so tempting for me to quickly take one bite after another. The fatty parts are also my favourite. Accompanied with the black pepper sauce, it is just so... tasty. However, it might be a little troublesome to eat if you are not skilled with the fork and knife.

At only $11.90, it is a must try for all lamb-lovers!

Fish & Chips (Premium) @ Mad Jack Cafe, Bukit Timah

This Fish & Chips is done in Aussie style and unlike other Fish & Chips, this one has a stronger 'fishy' taste to me. It is very fresh and boldly said by Mad Jack Cafe that "the fish you ate was still pissing around last night".

At only $14.90, it might not be very worthed it if you compare it to the other Fish & Chips out there but its definitely worth a try if you feel like eating fish instead of meat at Mad Jack Cafe!

Popiah @ ABC Popiah, Toa Payoh Lor 8

Have been eating this stall's popiah since it moved to the market under my house.

Where else can you find popiah that's $1.20 that comes with ingredients like tiny shrimps and mushroom slices?

Just looking at the uncle preparing the popiah makes me hungry. He places the normal ingredients we usually get from other stalls, then top it up with tasty looking mini-shrimps and mushroom slices before placing the boiled turnip on top. Roll, roll, roll and we get a super-valued and delicious popiah.

The skin is to the right thickness and can conceal the ingredients in well. I don't like popiah that gets wet before I start eating and this is definitely not one of them!

Heard there's a nice popiah stall at Lor 7 too. Going to try it soon!

UPDATE: No longer at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market

Teochew Fishball Noodles @ Bukit Timah Food Centre

Back at one of my favourite food centres to try this rather new stall selling Teochew fishball noodles.

Ordered mee pok dry w/ chilli for $3. $3 for only 2 fishballs and 2 slices of fishcake? It was still a great deal. Why? Because if fishballs have sizes to them, this would be XL and if fishcakes served with noodles have sizes too, they would be XXXL.

I liked the fishballs so much and the reason is because unlike other fishballs, it is so soft and not very chewy.

Teochew Fishball Noodles 2

Although the portion of the noodles given were quite small to me, it still managed to fill around 3/4 of my stomach. The combination of the noodles and sauce is great. I'm recommending this to my father the next time we are there.
